If the music industry hype-cycle continues to gather speed, this time next year we could be experiencing nostalgia for an era that hasn't even dawned yet
"Everything is more beautiful in the past," Midlake's Tim Smith tells Andy Gill, in the current issue of the Word. But as the frozen retrospective wastes of the decadal cusp have finally given way to a torrential thaw of new names and faces, this month's music press has actually contained a good deal of encouragement for those in whom Smith's contention that he "should probably try to get better at living in the moment" strikes an increasingly urgent chord.
NME's "New Decade In Music" and "Albums Of 2010" issues were two of the rusting rock-crit mothership's best in ages: I especially liked the sentence-making lineup of Giggs Hurts Kindness at the foot of the former's cover. Alex Miller's review of the These New Puritans album was exactly the kind of bold and thought-provoking piece that the paper's previous editor seemed determined to discourage, and the downloadable new acts mixtape is a happily instantaneous successor to the long, drawn-out coupon-collecting thrill of NME cassettes of old.
Hopefully, the non-availability of either of these two benchmark editions in my randomly selected local sample of one newsagent and one supermarket (supplanted by DJ International and Wired respectively) is not an omen. Ryan Tedder on working with Adele
Rumor has it that Kanye West is on some post-Taylorgate quest of spiritual recovery, but his blog keeps getting updated, mysteriously enough. And amidst the recent barrage of Hello Kitty dolls and installation art photos, there's an mp3 of "Soldier", a new collaboration between the Neptunes' N.E.R.D. project and Santigold. The song speeds the band's plastic funk-rock up to circa-'83 hardcore tempos but still crams in synth horns, snarled-out half-rap verses, and Santi White's quasi-reggae coo. Squint your eyes and it could be a Fishbone song.
"Soldier" is featured on Soundtrack 90210, a compilation of songs from the CW's "90210" reboot. The comp also features tracks from Jet and OK Go, as well as a Raconteurs/Adele collab, and it's out now from CBS Records.my favourite show. week one alright/almost great. how dare they let people mime though. fuck that, i dont vote for mimers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i looooove robbie as always!no favourite as of yet. hmmmmmmmm...
