MoWax founder Lavelle releases new album accompanied by dark visual graphics on his label Surrender All
Not many people can lay claim to the cumulative accomplishments of James Lavelle. The impresario continues to impress as 'Where Did The Night Fall', his fourth album under his UNKLE moniker, sees its release on his Surrender All imprint. But the DJ-come-producer-come-label owner has been busy on other creative fronts as well, placing emphasis on film to coincide with his new release. Lavelle's earlier film collaborations include the mesmerising video for Thom Yorke's 'A Rabbit in Your Headlights' and more recently the video for 'Heaven'. Also worth a mention is the enviable line of musicians he's worked with sinc... article continues »

Glastonbury is still quite possibly the best music festival in the world not only because it attracts the biggest of the big but because the biggest of the big often do things at Glastonbury that they probably won't do anywhere else. Like a surprise set from Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. So even though headliners U2 had to cancel their appearance, Glasto still looked great, based on professional-quality YouTube evidence. And, shock of all shocks, it was even sunny. In England. Who knew?
Click on to see video of a headbanded Yorke doing "Karma Police" (filmed by Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij, no less), as well as Gorillaz teaming up with Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, and Mark E. Smith, the xx getting blown off the stage by special guest Florence Welch, Shakira covering the xx, and Stevie Wonder paying tribute to Michael Jackson:

"When the corporate industry dies it will be no great loss to the world. So don't tie yourself to the sinking ship because, believe me, it's sinking."

Thus far this year, mad beat scientist Flying Lotus has released the blissed-out masterwork Cosmogramma and toured with Thom Yorke, so he's definitely earned himself a vacation. But FlyLo continues to crank out new material so often that he's just throwing us new songs for no reason now. On Monday night, FlyLo posted a link to a new track called "Heave (n)" on his Twitter with the words "I forgot to give you this..."
From what we can gather, the track isn't slated for inclusion on any future releases. Instead, it just exists as the soundtrack for this YouTube video, floating prettily behind a video of a pyramid-building scene from a movie I haven't seen. Click below to hear the song:
Last year, the mega-popular Twilight franchise included some of indie rock's big dogs on the New Moon soundtrack: Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear and Beach House, a Bon Iver/St. Vincent collab, and on down the line. Well, the trend continues on the soundtrack to the third installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which was revealed on MySpace today. Damn if there aren't some familiar names on it.
Vampire Weekend might not be the moodiest group of dudes in the world, but they do, after all, have the word "vampire" in their name. They make their Twilight debut with a song called "Jonathan Low". Beck and the suitably gothy Bat for Lashes team up for a collaboration called "Let's Get Lost". Band of Horses come with "Life on Earth"-- a funny song title for a movie about the living dead. The Dead Weather, Florence and the Machine, Metric, Cee-Lo Green, and the Black Keys also appear. So do the Bravery and Muse; can't win them all.
The Eclipse soundtrack is due June 8 from Chop Shop/Atlantic, and we've got the tracklist below.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack:
01 Metric: "Eclipse (All Yours)"
02 Muse: "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)"
03 The Bravery: "Ours"
04 Florence and the Machine: "Heavy in Your Arms"
05 Sia: "My Love"
06 Fanfarlo: "Atlas"
07 The Black Keys: "Chop and Change"
08 The Dead Weather: "Rolling in...
This week, I heard Theophilus London's new song, which threatens to do something rather rude to 'Paul Lester, the Guardian man'. Still, is this a career high for me, or what?
I've had some minor run-ins doing this job over the years. I've had Thom Yorke threaten me on Sunset Blvd, Jarvis Cocker accuse me of splitting him up with his girlfriend and Bernard Butler blame me for ruining his life. But I've never, to my knowledge, had a song written about me. Until now. Because yesterday I got word that Theophilus London, a rapper from Brooklyn, had done just that. The track is called Pyromilitia, it's taken from his new I Want You mixtape, and the first line goes: "Hey, Mr Paul Lester, you're the Guardian man ..."
Well, frankly, I could die happy, because that is the ultimate accolade â€' it's not just some cryptic allusion to me that only my mum would get. Of my rock journalist peers, only, to my knowledge, has Nick Kent ever been cited in a pop song, by Adam Ant in Press Darlings. I think Paul Morley got a mention once, but I don't recall the track, so basically, I rule, and I retire.
Ah, but just a minute. Play me that song again, and make sure my mum's out of the room this time. Was that a reference to a violent sexual act I heard, or have I been listening to too much
Flying Lotus is enjoying the life of a buzzworthy beatmaker.
Cosmogramma, the new album from Flying Lotus, comes out May 3 in the UK and May 4 in the U.S. via Warp. FlyLo is now streaming the entire album, Thom Yorke guest track and all, over at his MySpace page right this very second. Click over here to check it out. Thanks to Frank Cirrone for the tip.
